Biography

Amina Mire’s work is informed by their political commitment and by the history of their education. Mire’s education is truly interdisciplinary starting with a diploma in Pharmacy; BSC in Chemistry; BA and MA in Philosophy; PhD in sociology and a PhD minor in Gender and Women’s Studies.

Their current book project examines the rebranding and commodification of skin whitening biotechnology. Further, it explores the history of commodification of whiteness starting with the Antebellum America’s culture marked by the mass rape of enslaved Black women in the explicit purpose of producing light skinned slaves. It connects this tragic historical genealogy to the current mass marketing of multi-billion -dollar unregulated skin whitening biotechnology industry. In this book, skin whitening biotechnology is framed and examined as a site of racial capitalism, racism, sexism and colorism.

Mire has also submitted another book for review as of December 2023, and looks to propose yet another one come February 2024.
