Kunz is a senior member of the IEEE and ACM. He has been a professor at Carleton since 1997. His research interests centre on the Internet, in particular network architectures and network protocols. The focus of his work is on the Internet of Things (IoT), cellular networks, wireless communications and mobile computing.
