Carleton University researchers have been awarded nearly $8.5 million in grants for their research projects through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) touching on a wide range of subjects, from Comic-con and Indigenous cybercartography to modern treaty implementation.

Carleton’s largest grant of $2.5 million was awarded to the project Modern treaty implementation research: strengthening our shared future, led by Stephanie Irlbacher-Fox, an adjunct research professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration.

In close collaboration with the Land Claims Agreements Coalition and its Indigenous treaty organization and government members, this partnership will investigate implementation challenges that Indigenous signatories to treaties have experienced. The project will produce diverse and nuanced understandings of modern treaty implementation, act as a powerful and transformative basis for critiquing and innovating treaty implementation approaches, and ensure Canada fulfills its obligations.

Other notable projects include Comic-cons: an emerging urban media industry, led by Benjamin Woo in the School of Journalism and Communication, and An international partnership for innovative Indigenous cybercartographic development, led by Fraser Taylor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.

Quotes:

This investment from SSHRC recognizes the innovative and timely research being conducted by Carleton faculty members and their partners in Canada and around the world. This funding will enable them to conduct critical social research, train up-and-coming scholars and contribute to the betterment of society. – Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International).

The grant is an excellent opportunity for Indigenous governments and academics to partner on research that provides an understanding of what works, and what does not, when it comes to implementing land claim agreements in Canada. The grant will provide a new generation of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students with the opportunity to develop land claim implementation studies as a new field of research in Canada. — Irlbacher-Fox
