Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication, in collaboration with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS), is hosting a three-day roundtable, Media and Mass Atrocity: The Rwanda Genocide and Beyond, in the lead-up to the 25th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide.
More than two dozen international experts will discuss the media’s connection to mass atrocities.

There will be keynote speeches from Paul Watson, Pulitzer prize-winning Canadian journalist and author, and Roméo Dallaire, former commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR).
Papers presented at the roundtable discussions will help form the foundation of the book, Media and Mass Atrocity: The Rwanda Genocide and Beyond, edited by Carleton Journalism Prof. Allan Thompson. a CIGI Senior Fellow. It will be published by CIGI in 2019.
Everyone is welcome to attend and take part in question sessions. The co-ordinators are hoping to establish a research network of scholars, journalists and students who will continue to discuss these issues.

Ticket Prices
- $125 – Institutional fee (if your employer covers your registration costs)
- $100 – Individual registration and seniors
- $40 – Student registration fee, for students currently registered in a post-secondary institution.
- $10 – One day only, does not include meal packages. Registrants must indicate which day they wish to attend.
Registration includes a dinner and opening ceremony on Friday, Dec. 1, as well as coffee breaks and lunches on both Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 3.
About Allan Thompson
Allan Thompson has been a Carleton professor since 2003 after a journalism career at the Toronto Star, where he worked on Parliament Hill as a political reporter specializing in foreign affairs, defence and immigration issues. In January 2006, he launched the Rwanda Initiative to build capacity in Rwanda’s media sector after the genocide. He also published an edited collection called The Media and the Rwanda Genocide. He launched the Centre for Media and Transitional Societies (CMTS) at Carleton in 2009.
About Roméo Dallaire
Roméo Dallaire recounted his experiences as the former commander of UNAMIR in his book, Shake Hands With the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda. During his time there, Dallaire provided the United Nations with information about the massacre, which resulted in more than 800,000 people killed in less than 100 days. He earned the Meritorious Service Cross, the United States Legion of Merit and the Aegis Award on Genocide Prevention for his services. He founded the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, an international initiative to end the use of child soldiers.
About Paul Watson
Paul Watson is a Canadian photojournalist and was a war reporter for more than 20 years. He won the Pulitzer Prize for a photo of a Somali mob dragging the corpse of an American soldier through the streets of Mogadishu in 1993. He has won the National Headliner Award, the Canadian National Magazine Award, the Freedom of the Press Award and was named Times Mirror Journalist of the Year. He is the author of Where War Lives, Magnum Revolution and Ice Ghosts: The Epic Hunt for the Lost Franklin Expedition.
