Hackers are increasingly attacking the websites and information technology systems of private companies and public organizations. The good news is that something is being done about it.
CGI, Bell Canada, Phirelight Security Solutions, the Bank of Canada and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) are pleased to announce the second annual Cyber Security |Challenge | Sécurité Informatique (CyberSCI), a city and regional cyber security (hacking) competition for students in the Ottawa area.
On Saturday, Nov. 18th 2017, students selected from Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Algonquin College, and La Cité will compete in teams to attack a vulnerable computer network, break through the cyber defences, take control of the systems and advise the fictitious company on how to defend against their cyberattack.
The winning team will be presented The Mayor’s Cyber Challenge Cup by his Worship, Jim Watson, and four of the students from the top teams will have the opportunity to interview for fully-paid internships with sponsoring companies: CGI, Bell Canada, Bank of Canada, CSE Phirelight Security Solutions. Support is also being provided by SERENE-RISC, a network of Centres of Excellence for Knowledge Mobilization, ISSA-Ottawa chapter, the Carleton University Technology Innovation Management (TIM) program, and HackingAway.org.
“The Mayor’s Cyber Challenge Cup is a great opportunity to raise awareness about cyber security, while also providing students with educational and professional opportunities,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “I’m proud to once again support this fun and engaging competition that highlights the community’s Cyber security awareness efforts.”
The Canadian Cyber Security Challenge was founded in 2011 by Tom Levasseur, senior security consultant now with the Bank of Canada, to address the shortage of skilled resources in Canada’s IT security workforce.
Each school was invited to send eight competitors: two teams of four participants chosen by the academics representatives for their respective schools. For a contact list of these academic reps visit: Cybersecuritychallenge.ca/cyscott/students/
