Carleton University’s Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) will host a media availability to showcase its two industrial architecture robots, the only ones of their kind at a Canadian university.
The robots are able to mill stone, wood and other materials into stunning sculptural elements, so they are a big help when it comes to Carleton’s work helping to rehabilitate centuries-old sculptures at the Parliament Buildings.
One robot is roughly three metres high when fully extended and the other is a desk-sized model. Both are operated in a customized room on campus.
Carleton researchers will be available to speak to media at the demonstration. They include CIMS Director Stephen Fai and PhD candidates James Hayes and Ken Percy, who has been milling in wood using the smaller robot for the future Senate chamber.

Background
The robots are helping CIMS and federal government collaborators continue cutting-edge work in the rapidly advancing world of digitally assisted fabrication.
CIMS team use the jointed-arm robots to assist in creating sculptural elements in a variety of materials from digital models obtained by laser scanning and photogrammetry. This technology has been used on Parliament Hill and the Government Conference Centre, where sculptural details are being restored or created as part of long-term renovations.
