The Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) is pleased to announce that Toronto-based artist Jane Martin has arranged in her will for a transformative gift that will enable CUAG to establish a specialized curatorial position, the Jane Martin and Ewen McCuaig Curator of Art by Women.
This position, named in honour of Martin and her late husband, musician Ewen McCuaig, will allow CUAG to significantly expand the scope and impact of its longstanding commitment to women and women artists.
The Martin/McCuaig Curator will focus on researching, curating, acquiring, publishing and disseminating art made by Canadian women. This work takes place in the context of systemic barriers to full participation for women in the art world and in society. It will, at the same time, honour the fundamental contributions that feminists have made to the advancement of women’s and human rights.

About Jane Martin
Since the 1970s, Jane Martin’s work in painting, drawing, lithography, installation and video has been exhibited widely across Canada and abroad and is represented in many public collections, including the Carleton University Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario, National Gallery of Canada, Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Canada Council Art Bank.
Martin has long worked as an advocate for the rights and representation of women artists, authoring studies that examined women’s participation on Canada Council juries, selection committees and advisory boards and as grant recipients in the 1970s. She was co-founder of Canadian Artists Representation Copyright Collective in 1988, and on the founding board of CANCOPY (Access Copyright).
Martin is a graduate of Carleton University (MA/1966). She is currently being recognized as a highly accomplished member of the Carleton community in the fourth iteration of Carleton’s 75th anniversary campaign. For more information, please see carleton.ca/cu75/.
