Ben Kruser, the assistant manager of the Carleton University Bookstore, has released his latest novel, a fiction book titled Running Beyond Empty.
The author was at the university bookstore this week to officially launch the book after its publication in November 2016.
Following the lives of a single mother and her teenage daughter as they start life over in a small town, the book is Kruser’s latest written work in his career as a local Ottawa author, alongside working at the university.
With a background in freelance writing and biology before coming to Carleton, Kruser said his past experiences working outdoors and in youth development contributed to his newest book.
“I’ve been lucky enough to move into Carleton and take all my experiences of the outdoors and writing, and turn it into a novel,” said Kruser.
As a re-write of a previous novel he first published in 2014, Kruser said he hopes the lessons of staying true to your values and pursuing what’s important to you will resonate with readers.
“One of the great things about my job is working everyday with students,” said Kruser. “I think that the book that I’ve written is very similar to the experiences that I see everyday, it’s all about learning and growing.”
Kruser’s passion for long-distance endurance running led to the book’s title, a theme found throughout the novel.
Wednesday’s launch was the first stop of a promotional cycle for the author and he said he hopes to continue writing and publishing in the future.
