Carleton University’s Centre for Women in Politics and Public Leadership was honoured by the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW Canada) with the 2016 BPW Canada Centennial Recognition Award at the federation’s convention on August 13, 2016 in Calgary.
The centre is focused on supporting equitable representation of women in Canada’s government and positions of leadership in all sectors. It is among 100 organizations from across Canada that were recognized by BPW Canada for their work to improve political, economic and social conditions for women and girls. The award ceremony was held during BPW Canada’s Centennial Gala and is part of the organization’s effort to recognize 100 years of women’s suffrage in Canada.
“We are honoured to receive this recognition for the work of the centre,” said Clare Beckton, founding executive director. “Advancing women’s leadership in all sectors is important for our country as a whole.”
The centre works to enhance women’s influence and support public leadership opportunities by providing education, public outreach, professional development and scholarly research.
It recently released a study of women in leadership positions in the public service entitled Women’s Leadership Matters: The Impact of Women’s Leadership in the Canadian Federal Public Service, which interviewed numerous current and retired public service executives and deputy ministers. The study found that women have a significant impact on programs and culture in the public service and provided several recommendations to the federal government.
“The BPW Canada Centennial Award recognizes 100 organizations across Canada during the Centennial Year of Women’s Suffrage,” said Jenny Gulamani-Abdulla, vice-president of BPW Canada. ”We are thrilled to celebrate our collective achievements in Canada as we continue to work even harder in the years to come so we can position more women in leadership and decision making roles. We feel honoured to pay tribute to the remarkable work of Carleton University’s Centre for Women in Politics and Public Leadership.”
Founded in 1930, BPW Canada is a non-profit, non-partisan organization committed to enhancing the business and leadership potential of women across Canada. BPW Canada is part of an international federation with member organizations in over 95 countries.
