It takes an early start to the day to play 100 holes of golf, but that’s exactly what a group of dedicated Ravens fans did recently to support their favourite football team.

The Carleton Ravens football program held its third 100-Hole Golf Challenge at the Manderley on the Green golf course in Ottawa on June 20. The fundraiser will contribute to the continuing success of the program, which was reinstated in 2013 after a 15 year absence. The support of Carleton alumni and community partners has been instrumental in its return. The golf tournament exceeded its target with participants raising over $20,000 from more than 250 generous donors.

The event was attended by 16 golfers. Each player fundraised a minimum of $2,000 in donations, with individual contributions ranging from $20 to $2,000.

The event included the participation of a number of members of Old Crow Football, an organization of former Carleton Ravens football players, and was hosted by Old Crow Doug Ferne. Current Ravens football player Stefano Nepolitano, as well as coaches Ryan Bechmanis and Jean-Philippe Asselin, joined alumni and community members in the marathon golf tournament.

More than a third of the players were returning attendees from previous years’ tournaments, including Old Crow Brion Fahey, who has championed the 100-hole golf challenge since its inception and has played in the event each year.

The players were on the course by 8 a.m. and golfed until early evening. Prizes were awarded to the top three finishers, and all golfers were provided with Carleton apparel in recognition of their hard work and dedication.

“What a day it was,” said Patrick Stoqua, senior development officer, football, with Carleton University. “Great weather, an incredible venue at Manderley‎, and substantial funds raised to support Carleton Ravens football. Many thanks to all participants and sponsors, and a special thank you to Trinity Developments Group Inc. for their corporate support.”

Organizers are already looking forward to building on this success by increasing the fundraising goal, issuing a friendly challenge to participants to bring another golfer with them to next year’s tournament, and continuing to reach beyond Carleton’s borders to strengthen community involvement.
