Carleton University today conferred a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on Peter Coughlin in recognition of his leadership in business development, architectural heritage and his volunteer service in the fields of health and education.
Coughlin was honoured during the third day of Convocation. About 4,380 students are receiving their degrees over four days of ceremonies.
“Giving back is an opportunity — an opportunity to change the world — to improve someone’s life —to invest in the future,” said Coughlin. “No one can live a full and successful life when their energy and choices are focused entirely on themselves.”
Coughlin holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Carleton University and a MBA from Western University.
He started his business career in 1980 with the Canadian National Railway Pension Fund before moving to Cemp Investments. In 1987, he became senior vice-president of real estate investments for Cemp’s successor, Claridge Properties Inc., and was appointed president in 1991.
He co-founded Redbourne Properities Inc. in 1995. The company manages a real estate portfolio in excess of five million square feet, including some of Montreal’s premium commercial buildings, such as Place Montreal Trust and Place du Parc.
He has served as board chair of Lower Canada College and the Montreal General Hospital Foundation. In 2010, he joined McGill’s Board of Governors.
Coughlin was on the organizing committee of Montreal’s Hockey Helps the Homeless.
“He is a leader in real estate and investment, an active member of the Montreal community and a proud family man,” said Jerry Tomberlin, dean of the Sprott School of Business.
