Carleton University and the High Commission of India are pleased to host a one-day seminar entitled Celebrating Dr. Ambedkar’s Legacy: Democratic Justice Based on the Ideas of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji (B.R.) Ambedkar, the architect of India’s constitution.
When: Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This public seminar will feature prominent history scholars from India, the United States and Canada. They will analyze Ambedkar’s role and contributions in the creation of the republic.
They keynote address will be given by Gopal Guru, a world-renowned scholar on Ambedkar’s philosophy and his work. Other speakers include Anupama Rao from Columbia University, Arun Mukherjee from York University, and Chinnaiah Jangam from Carleton.
About B.R. Ambedkar:
B.R. Ambedkar was a lawyer, economist, politician and professor who dedicated his life to eradicating social discrimination in India by fighting for the rights of minority groups. After his appointment as India’s first Law Minister, he was appointed as the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee. He wrote India’s constitution, which envisions safety and security for Indians, freedom of religion, and the abolition of “untouchability.’’ He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1990.
