On Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12, Carleton University students took part in Relay for Life, a national event that raises funds and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society each year. Together, the students raised a record-breaking $117,000, making Carleton the top-earning university in Canada for the third year in a row.

The 12-hour event kicked off at 7 p.m. on Friday and continued until 7 a.m. the following morning. Participants gathered in teams to take turns walking laps around the Carleton Fieldhouse. This year’s relay saw an increase in registrations from campus clubs and residence groups. In total, 800 individuals participated in the fundraiser.

“We are extremely happy with the results this year,” said Relay for Life co-chair, Brad Martin. “We are constantly trying to reach out to new people to attend the event, so it was great to see an increase in participants from groups on campus.”

The event is Carleton’s largest student-run fundraiser, exceeding their fundraising goal this year by over $7,000.00 and raising more than $550,000 since 2009. The event hosted remarks from Andrew Croll of the Canadian Cancer Society as well as Ryan Flannagan, Director of Carleton’s Office of Student Affairs. Cancer survivor and Carleton alumni, Chris Chow, spoke at the luminary ceremony.
