Carleton University officially announced the new Professor T. Joseph Scanlon Basketball Award for Academic Excellence at the Ravens basketball home opener today.
Scanlon recognized the challenges faced by players in balancing academic studies with varsity sports. The aim of this annual award is to encourage players to seek excellence in both. Alternating between male and female athletes, it will be awarded to the returning player with the best academic performance the previous season.
Scanlon was a strong supporter of Ravens athletics until his unexpected death on May 2, 2015. He joined the permanent faculty of the Carleton University School of Journalism, later renamed the School of Journalism and Communication, in 1966 and served as its director from 1966 to 1973. Following his retirement in 1995 and until his death, he remained on faculty as professor emeritus. From the 1980s on, he also became known for his extensive disaster research. In 2002, he was awarded the Charles Fritz Award for his lifetime contributions to international disaster research.
At Carleton, he was particularly well known for his support of men’s and women’s basketball. He was a dedicated fan who rarely missed games over his five decades on faculty. His longstanding blog on Ravens basketball had subscribers nationwide, including many active coaches. Ravens coaches knew him as a strong advocate for balancing academics and athletics. As a Carleton undergraduate, Scanlon played junior varsity basketball and earned the Gold Medal for Journalism. As a professor, he coached the Ravens men’s tennis team to four championships in five years. He was also instrumental in launching a study hall program for the men’s basketball team.
