With the new school year rapidly approaching at Carleton University, there are lots of stories for media to consider.

Carleton is introducing a number of new academic programs this year, including its Bachelor of Global and International Studies for students who want to deepen their understanding of the world while preparing for a wide range of career options.

There is also a new concentration in Earth Sciences — Finance: Resource Valuation — designed for a professional career in resource exploration or investment banking.

New minors include archeology, arts management, digital humanities and medieval and early modern studies.

Carleton will also offer a new post-baccalaureate diploma in Economics and in Women’s and Gender Studies.

This year, Carleton launched a new program called the Mentorship Network. It is an initiative of the Student Experience Office (SEO) which looks to connect peer mentors and mentees across campus through SEO programs and other partner programs. The Mentorship Network provides comprehensive mentorship training, resources and information for all peer mentors connected to the network. A new mentor lounge will be opening in Sept. 2015 and additional events, trainings and workshops will be offered.

Carleton’s varsity sports teams have been recruiting and strengthening their rosters. The Ravens football team has secured top recruit Bill Aziz, a defensive tackle from St. Thomas, Ont., who will be studying criminology. The women’s rugby and basketball teams have landed Anna Janowicz at flanker and Celine De Roy at guard respectively.

Carleton’s incredibly successful men’s basketball team has brought in guard Stanley Mayambo from Fredericton to help fill the vacuum left by departing veterans.

Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams have attracted strong recruits, including Adam Chapman at forward and Maude Ranger on defence. Similarly, the men’s and women’s soccer teams have secured newcomers Dante Cobisa, who will be studying biology with a concentration in health science, and Aaliyah McPherson, who will be studying criminology and criminal justice.

More than 60 faculty members will be joining the Carleton community, adding a variety of expertise and research interests. Their research spans everything from social work and particle physics to international affairs and digital media.
