Carleton University is pleased to announce the appointment of Jill Lahn Stoner as the new director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism effective July 1st, 2015. Currently the associate dean of the Graduate Division and professor of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, Prof. Stoner brings remarkable experience to the school as a well-established professional architect, a distinguished teacher and an academic administrator.

Rafik Goubran, dean of the research intensive Faculty of Engineering and Design, and Prof. Sheryl Boyle, interim director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, welcome Prof. Stoner enthusiastically. Faculty, staff, students and alumni look forward to working with her to reinforce the School’s position as a visionary leader in linking architecture and urbanism, in enhancing connections with the city of Ottawa and in initiating collaborations with national and international institutions and industry.

Prof. Stoner was previously chair (2010 – 2014) of the Graduate Program in Architecture at UC Berkeley (2008 – 2012), where she established new post-baccalaureate and post-professional programs in architecture. This was followed by her appointment as chair of the PhD program in Jewish Studies, through which she was instrumental in the establishment of the new Center for Jewish Studies at Berkeley, serving as its first chair. She was a member of Berkeley’s Graduate Council for several years and in 2014 was appointed associate dean of Berkeley’s Graduate Division.

In 2012, Prof. Stoner held the position of Scholar in Residence at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. She has been a visiting professor at several renowned institutions, including the International Laboratory for Architecture and Urban Design (ILAUD) in Italy, Roger William University, University of Washington, University of Michigan, Tulane University, New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (1979) and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from New College in Sarasota (1975).

On behalf of the Faculty of Engineering and Design, Dean Goubran wishes to thank Prof. Sheryl Boyle for her outstanding leadership as interim director over the past four years. Under Prof. Boyle’s skilled management, the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism has extended its academic success and research initiatives.
