On Wednesday, April 15, 2015 the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project (CPEP) is holding a public forum at Ottawa City Hall about crowding and other problems at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre (OCDC).

The event will look at how conditions have evolved during the 18 months after CPEP’s previous public forum, as well as how the OCDC has responded to recent high profile controversies. The event will feature short presentations from various speakers, stories from prisoners and their families, and time for public input and dialogue.

This event is free and open to the public and media are invited to attend.

When: Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Jean Pigott Place, Ottawa City Hall, 110 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa

Confirmed speakers include former prisoners, the chair of the new Community Advisory Board for OCDC, the executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa, a spokesperson for a group of mothers of OCDC prisoners, and lawyer Paul Champ, who brought a successful case to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal after a woman with cancer and mental health concerns was kept in solitary confinement at OCDC for more than 200 days.

OCDC superintendent Maureen Harvey will attend the event to note the concerns raised, but will make no immediate response.

CPEP is a group of academics and students from Carleton University and the University of Ottawa who work with those affected by criminalization and punishment to conduct research and raise public awareness on penal policy and practice in Canada.
