NATO has proposed its members increase military spending to two per cent of GDP. However, Canada has already rejected this proposal and currently uses about one per cent of GDP on its military.

Carment is a NATO fellow and is listed in Who’s Who in International Affairs. In addition, he serves as the principal investigator for the Country Indicators for Foreign Policy project (CIFP).

He has served as the director of Carleton’s Centre for Security and Defence Studies, and has received SSHRC fellowships and research awards, Carleton’s Research Achievement Award and a Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award. He has held fellowships at the Kennedy School, Harvard and the Hoover Institution, Stanford. He currently heads a team of researchers that evaluates policy effectiveness in failed and fragile states.

Robertson is senior strategic advisor for the U.S.-based law firm of McKenna, Long and Aldridge. He writes on international affairs and is a frequent contributor and commentator on CTV, CBC and CPAC.

He is current President of the Canadian International Council’s National Capital Branch. Mr. Robertson sits on the board of the Conference of Defence Associations Institute, Canada World Youth and he is honorary chair of the Canada Arizona Business Council.

A career foreign service officer from 1977-2010, Colin Robertson served as first head of the advocacy secretary at the Canadian Embassy in Washington and consul general in Los Angeles. In his final assignment he directed a project on Canada-U.S. Engagement at Carleton’s Centre for Trade Policy and Law with private and public sector support. A member of the team that negotiated the Canada-U.S. FTA and NAFTA, he is co-author of Decision at Midnight: The Inside Story of the Canada-U.S. FTA.

Saideman is specifically interested in discussing the NATO perspective and the general idea of irredentism or annexation. Saideman’s research interests focus on the causes and consequences of intervention into intra-state conflicts. His current work focuses on Canadian and NATO efforts in Afghanistan. He teaches courses on civil-military relations and American foreign and defence policy.
