Fifty-two high-achieving secondary students will tackle pressing design challenges during this year’s Shad Valley program at Carleton University. The students will engage on the front lines of innovation as they begin to contend with an issue relevant to developing society.

The theme of the yearly project will be unveiled at an event on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. Media are invited to attend.

When: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 from 7 p.m. until 10p.m.

Once presented with a theme, which varies each year, students compete to formulate products, business plans and solutions which will become first steps towards solving these problems for generations to come.  Sustainability, responsibility and timeliness are all factors in each project theme.

Speakers include:

  • Peter Rickets, vice-president and provost of Carleton University
  • Brian Burns, director of Carleton’s Institute of Environmental Science
  • Jessie Thavonekham, master’s studentin Carleton’s School of Industrial Design
  • Don Grant, executive director of Ottawa Centre EcoDistrict.

The hard-work of thestudents will be on display at the annual Open Day event on Thursday, July 24, 2014. Students will present project prototypes, diagrams and breakdowns.
