The Graduate Students’ Association at Carleton University is hosting the official launch of its community garden. The garden was named Kitigànensag by Algonquin Elders, meaning “Little Gardens.”
Kitigànensag is a source of pride for the Carleton community, especially for the many volunteers who built it and the gardeners who are harvesting the first crop. It is an excellent example of students, staff and faculty coming together to create something sustainable, recreational, educational and accessible to the whole community.
The event will include a smudging ceremony performed by Algonquin Elders, special guest speakers, free vegetarian hot dogs and cold drinks, and an optional tour and explanation of the permaculture practices incorporated into the construction of Kitigànensag. The launch coincides with the Cycling and Enviro Fair being hosted at Carleton University between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (located outdoors between the University Centre and Architecture Building).
When: Noon, Thursday, Sept. 19
Where: Kitigànensag is located north of the Leeds Building and beside parking lot P6. A map of the Carleton campus is available at carleton.ca/campus.
Representatives of the Graduate Students’ Association and Carleton University will be available to the media.
