Yasir Naqvi, MPP Ottawa Centre, announced a new initiative to provide support for former Crown wards and youth who are either in care or leaving the care of Children’s Aid Societies and pursuing post-secondary education. The announcement was made today at Carleton University.
“These are times for strong partnerships,” said Carleton President Roseann O’Reilly Runte. “This initiative is a fine example of universities, colleges and the provincial government working together to find creative solutions to problems of access. The Carleton University community is proud to participate in this worthwhile program.”
Starting this September, the provincial government will partner with all Ontario universities and a third of the province’s colleges to provide a grant of $500 per month to help cover living costs for former Crown wards aged 21 to 24 who are enrolled in OSAP-eligible college and university programs.
Together, this partnership will also cover 100 per cent of tuition fees, up to a maximum of $6,000 per year, for former Crown wards and youth who are in and leaving care. Ontario will cover 50 per cent of tuition costs for 850 eligible students, and participating institutions will cover the remaining cost of tuition, for up to four years of study.
