Carleton University’s Research, Education, Accessibility and Design Initiative is pleased to announce that David Berman will be serving a two-year appointment as chair of the Carleton Access Network, a new working committee on accessible information technology. The committee’s purpose is to facilitate the development of project and research proposals, to build and solidify Carleton’s knowledge base in the accessible information field and to identify opportunities in information technology appropriate for the READ Initiative. The committee will provide guidance to the Carleton community in realizing these opportunities.

“I am very proud to have been given this opportunity,” said Berman. “As a past student, I am honoured to have the opportunity to help make Carleton the most accessible university.”

As part of his appointment, Berman brought his one-day crash course on accessibility to Carleton. The course was entitled The New Standard on Web Accessibility: WCAG 2.0 and took place on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, in Carleton University’s River Building.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have David Berman join the READ team as chair of our new committee on information technology and to begin our new collaboration by hosting his renowned one day workshop here at Carleton,” said Dean Mellway, acting director of the Read Initiative.

Starting in January 2013, Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) mandates that all employers in Ontario with at least 50 employees, including school boards, colleges and universities, must adapt their training materials, websites and other communication documents to meet worldwide accessibility standards. Berman’s course, suitable for graphic and website designers working in the educational sector, gives designers a thorough grasp of how to do just that.
