Carleton University’s Initiative for Parliamentary and Diplomatic Engagement, in association with the Ottawa Diplomatic Association and the Parliamentary Centre, is pleased to offer its second annual orientation to facilitate the professional and social integration of newly arrived diplomats and their families.
When: Friday, Oct. 26, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

8 a.m- Registration and coffee with the deans of Carleton University.
8:45 a.m.- Introduction and welcome on behalf of Carleton University from
John Osborne, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, , Maureen Boyd, director of the Carleton Initiative for Parliamentary and Diplomatic Engagement.
9 a.m.- Session one: Canada’s parliamentary system.
Remarks: M.P. Paul Dewar, Official Opposition critic for international affairs and M.P. Barry Devolin, deputy chair of committees of the whole.
Presentation: Jean-Paul Ruszkowski, CEO of the Parliamentary Centre.
10:15 a.m.- Session two: Effective diplomacy in Ottawa – best practices.
Moderator: Colin Robertson, vice-president of the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute.
Panelists: James Baxter, publisher of iPolitics, Perrin Beatty, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce; Anne McGrath, former chief of staff to Official Opposition NDP leaders Jack Layton, Nycole Turmel and Thomas Mulcair.
Subjects: Diplomatic access points; Canadian business and the private sector, media, provinces and other sources of influence; where to get information; and public diplomacy goals.
11 a.m.- Coffee Break.
11:30 a.m.- Welcome from the Ottawa Diplomatic Association.
His Excellency Zenon Kosiniak-Kamysz, ambassador of Poland and president of Ottawa Diplomatic Association.
11:40 a.m.- Session three: Lessons to be learned.
Lawrence Lederman, chair of Carleton’s Ambassadors Speaking Series, will orient diplomats currently posted to Canada with a talk about What I wished I had known and done when I first arrived.
12:10 p.m.- Session four: Social and family integration.
Spouses of diplomats will describe their experiences integrating their families to Ottawa. Claire Marshall from Volunteer Ottawa will speak.
12:45 p.m.- Orientation closing remarks.
Deputy Mayor Steve Desroches, City of Ottawa, Roseann O’Reilly Runte, president and vice-chancellor of Carleton University.
1 p.m.- Buffet lunch and resource fair.
The Resource Fair will feature government and private organizations that provide services to diplomats in areas such as education, tourism, culture, recreation, social clubs, publications, volunteering and children’s issues. These organizations will be on hand to provide information and resources: the City of Ottawa, the City of Gatineau, Parent Resource Centre, National Arts Centre, Ottawa Festivals Network, Volunteer Ottawa, Embassy Magazine and many more.
2 p.m.- Orientation ends.
