Sandra Dyck, Director of Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG), is thrilled to announce the appointment of Heather Anderson as the gallery’s new curator. Dyck says, “Heather brings extensive knowledge of and passion for contemporary art, an exemplary record of curatorial projects and publications, and diverse work experience at such institutions as the National Gallery of Canada and Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery. She will make a fantastic addition to the CUAG team.”
Heather has a distinguished and innovative curatorial practice in Canadian and international contemporary art. She has worked since 2006 at the National Gallery of Canada, as Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, and more recently, Assistant Curator of Modern Canadian Art. There, she curated such exhibitions as Contemporary Drawing: Recent Acquisitions (2010, with Rhiannon Vogl), Adams Demand Farmer (2010, with Josée Drouin-Brisebois, NGC @ MoCCA, Toronto), Walid Raad / The Atlas Group / Jayce Salloum / Hong Hao (2009), An Enchanted Domain (2008), and Performing the Self (2006). She has contributed texts to National Gallery publications including Builders (2012), It Is What It Is (2010), Comic Relief (2008), and Art Metropole Top 100 (2006).
Heather’s other curatorial projects include Sounding Selves (Dalhousie Art Gallery, Halifax, 2012), Unravelling a bit of the universe (Available Light, Ottawa, 2011), We Declare Art A GATS Free Zone (Commons Service Group, Grenoble and Venice, 2005), New Media / No Memory (Centre for Art Tapes, Halifax, 2003), and Do Try This At Home (Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, Halifax, 2001), several of which were accompanied by catalogues. She has published art criticism in Canadian Art, Blackflash, C Magazine, and Arts Atlantic.
Heather completed the one-year International Curatorial Training program at the École du Magasin in Grenoble, France (2005). She also has an MA in Women’s Studies from Dalhousie University (2003), a BFA from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design (1998), and a Diploma in Fine Arts from Langara College (1995). She recently participated in “The Retreat: A Position of dOCUMENTA (13)” at the Banff Centre for the Arts, and is the recipient of grants from the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Nova Scotia Talent Trust, among other agencies.
