Carleton University’s Adrian Chan Wins Prestigious National Teaching Award

Carleton Engineering Professor Adrian Chan has been named one of Canada’s most exceptional university teachers by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and 3M Canada.

He will be presented with a 2012 3M National Teaching Fellowship on June 21, at the society’s annual conference in Montreal. Nine others from across Canada are also receiving the fellowship, which recognizes exceptional achievements and contributions by teacher-scholars.

“I am thankful for having such a great job; one that I thoroughly enjoy,’’ said Chan. “I appreciate the help and encouragement that Carleton University has provided me over the years, which has enabled me to continually improve myself as an educator. I am thankful for the many outstanding students I have had the pleasure of interacting with.’’

Nominator Margaret Cusson of Carleton’s Educational Development Centre, said Chan is passionate about his teaching and always willing to guide his students and teaching assistants as he shares innovations with them.

“This is a great recognition of Adrian’s dedication to teaching excellence and leadership, and also a testament to Carleton’s dedication and support of teaching excellence,” Cusson said. “Adrian has working closely with the EDC since he began his career at Carleton and we’ve been so impressed with the exceptional teaching strategies he employs.’’

Born in Montreal and raised in Waterloo, Ont., Prof. Chan teaches in Carleton’s Department of Systems and Computer Engineering. He is also associate director of the Ottawa Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering.

The 3M National Teaching Fellowships have been awarded for 27 years and are considered the most prestigious recognition of teaching excellence in Canada.

Prof. Chan joins previous Carleton’s 3M fellowship winners: Bob Burk (2006), Janna Fox (2002), Aviva Freedman (1997), Brian Little (1999) and Tim Pychyl (1999).
