Canada against Malaria! is holding a cycling event from Carleton University in Ottawa to the CN Tower in Toronto to raise funds for UNICEF-Canada’s fight against malaria. The cyclists are made up of a team of enthusiastic students mostly from Carleton University.
Canada against Malaria! aims to raise $5000 or more to enable UNICEF-Canada to continuously fight malaria through the provision of insecticide-treated bed nets in malaria-endemic countries.
The cyclists start on June 30 and arrive in Toronto on July 4. The public is welcome to join the cyclists.
Prior to this event, a BBQ fund raiser event will be held on June 21 at 4:30 p.m. at the Tory Quad on the Carleton campus and the public is invited to participate. Donations are welcome.
According to UNICEF-Canada, “every day, 3,000 children under the age of five die from malaria; that’s one child every 30 seconds. In Africa, malaria causes about 20 per cent of all child deaths.”
As many as 500,000 children could be saved every year if all children under the age of five in Africa slept under treated bed nets.
