Grete Hale, author of “Baker’s Daughter: The story of a long, rich and very Canadian life,” will be signing books Wednesday at the Carleton University Bookstore. The memoir features stories and photos from one of Ottawa’s most beloved citizens.
Hale began her teenage years working for Morrison Lamothe, a bakery founded by her father, Cecil Morrison, and his partner Richard Lamothe in 1911.
At age 13, Hale packaged oatmeal cookies at the bakery before rising to become the company’s consumer services director.
In 1967, the company supplied a 30-foot birthday cake along with 40,000 hand-iced cupcakes for Canada’s Centennial party at Parliament Hill on July 1.
All net proceeds from book sales go to CANHAVE Children’s Centre, an organization working to provide an education for children orphaned by AIDS in Uganda. Hale was a founding member of the organization.
