Carleton University Professor James Meadowcroft has been awarded Doctor Honoris Causa (honorary doctorate) by the Faculty of Economics and Administration of the University of Tampere in Finland. The award was for scholarly contributions to the understanding the politics and policy involving the environment and sustainable development.
Dr. Meadowcroft and his wife Stephanie DuRant were guests of the University of Tampere, taking part in three days of celebration which included a sword-whetting ceremony, the degree conferment, a procession through the town, a service at the cathedral, a banquet, a formal ball and a lake cruise. Dr. Meadowcroft received a doctoral hat and ceremonial sword to mark the occasion.
The University of Tampere last held a doctoral degree ceremony of this kind in 2000. Eight honorary doctorates and 100 doctoral degrees were conferred at the 2010 event. The Speaker of the Finish Parliament, Sauli Niinistö, also received an honorary doctorate on the occasion.
