Malcolm Butler will be joining Carleton University on Aug. 1 for a five-year term as Dean of Science.

Dr. Butler brings an impressive record of academic and administrative experience to Carleton, said Peter Ricketts, provost and vice-president (Academic).

Currently Dr. Butler is Dean of the Faculty of Science at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, N.S., a position he has held since July 2006. Previously, he was chair of the Department of Astronomy and Physics at Saint Mary’s.

He has served on several boards and councils, including the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP), the Board of Management for the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA), the Atlantic Provinces Council on the Sciences (APICS) and TRIUMF National Laboratory Board of Management.

Most recently, Dr. Butler was appointed by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) to chair the long-range planning process for subatomic physics in Canada.

Dr. Butler received his PhD in theoretical nuclear physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and his BSc Honours in theoretical physics and applied math from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

In addition to his decanal position at Carleton University, Dr. Butler will hold a faculty appointment in our Department of Physics at the rank of full professor with tenure.
