Carleton University will be honouring 11 outstanding Canadians at its 136th Convocation being held in the Fieldhouse from June 8 to 11.

The honorary degree recipients include former prime minister, the Right Honorable Joe Clark, lawyer and advocate Maureen McTeer, author and activist Maude Barlow and internationally respected journalist Joe Schlesinger.

The full list of honorary degree recipients is:

9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 8
Dr. Jozef Straus, former CEO and co-chairman of JDS Uniphase Corporation, “in recognition of an outstanding contribution to information and telecommunication technology.”

2:00 p.m. June 8
Ginette Rodger, senior vice-president of professional practice and chief nursing executive, Ottawa Hospital General Campus, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and past president of the Canadian Nurses Association, “in recognition of a distinguished career in health care and her outstanding contribution to improving the effectiveness of health services in Ottawa and throughout Canada.”

9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9
Joe Schlesinger, renowned television journalist and author, “in recognition of his inspiring writing, his stellar career as a journalist, his international expertise and understanding.”

2:00 p.m. June 9
The Right Honorable Joe Clark, former prime minister, “in recognition of his support for parliamentary democracy, his dedication as a professor and his work on issues of global importance.”

Maureen McTeer, lawyer, author and passionate speaker on topics ranging from democracy and institution-building to women’s health, “in recognition of her contributions to women’s equality and rights within Canada and internationally, as well as her advancement of health and medical issues.”

Michael Sabia, president and chief executive officer, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, “in recognition of outstanding leadership in corporate social responsibility and community investment.”

Maude Barlow, national chairperson of the Council of Canadians and chair of the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch, “in recognition of her passionate commitment and tireless efforts to promote social justice.”

2:00 p.m. June 10
Philippe Camus, chairman of the board of directors of Alcatel-Lucent, Paris, France, “in recognition of a distinguished career and leadership in European aerospace and strong promotion of transatlantic co-operation in defense.”

9:30 a.m. Friday, June 11
Andrée Lortie, founding president of La Cité collégiale, the first French-language College of Applied Arts and Technology in Ontario, “in recognition of her dynamic leadership and unflagging enthusiasm for French education and the development of productive partnerships within the Ottawa region.”

2:00 p.m. June 11
Michael Kirby, chair, Mental Health Commission of Canada, “in recognition of his role in bringing about positive change to the mental health system and the quality of life of Canadians suffering from mental illness or addictions.”

Laurence Kardish, senior curator, Department of Film, Museum of Modern Art, New York City and Carleton alumnus, “in recognition of a distinguished career and learned contribution to film and arts culture worldwide and for his continuing devotion to Canadian cinema and Carleton University.”

Other significant awards to be presented at Convocation include:

  • Stuart Adam, who held such positions as vice-present (academic) and provost, dean of arts, and director of the School of Journalism, will be awarded the Founders Award during the morning ceremony on June 9. This award, which is Carleton’s highest non-academic honour, was inaugurated in June 1996 to recognize and pay tribute to those individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Carleton through their dedication, generosity and commitment to the values of the university.
  • Nicole Misera Ward, who is graduating with an honours degree in criminology and criminal justice, will be presented with the Board of Governors Award for Outstanding Community Achievement during the June 9 afternoon ceremony. This award is given to a full-time graduating student in recognition of his/her voluntary involvement in the not-for-profit sector. Ward led a team of volunteers to Tanzania and Nicaragua. Her connection with Global Youth Network took her to Thailand for the third time this May, where she volunteered with an organization that helps street women and girls build alternative employment skills. As well, she worked with the Mirror Foundation to help build a community well and water tank.
