Humanitarian Stephen Lewis will be giving a public talk at Carleton University as part of The People vs. Cancer 2010 Speaking Tour.

The public is invited to attend this free talk on Thursday, March 25 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Bell Theatre of the Minto Building at Carleton. The event is first come, first served.

Mr. Lewis will be joined onstage by three Carleton University students. Two of these students, Komal Minhas and Heather Page, helped organize Carleton’s first Relay for Life, a 12-hour overnight event that raised more than $48,000 for cancer. The third student, Kathleen Courtney, will share her personal story.

Mr. Lewis will draw on lessons learned in the global movement against AIDS. He’ll address the role that an engaged public can play by promoting the participation of everyday people in the battle against cancer. He will challenge Canadian universities and students to use their skills, innovation, creativity and leadership to help reduce cancer rates significantly in one generation.

The Campaign to Control Cancer (C2CC) is launching the tour, which begins the day before in Sudbury. Also speaking will be Karen Malone from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, a major sponsor of the tour.

“Stephen Lewis will help spread the word that everyone, especially young people, can help in the fight against cancer but we need new, innovative ways to do this,” says Pat Kelly, director of C2CC.  “It is not only important that young people understand that almost half of them will eventually suffer from this disease, but it is essential that they realize that they too can make a difference by taking responsibility in this battle.”

In conjunction with the tour, C2CC is launching a series of Community Conversations to engage the public in this initiative. Ideas and comments that are shared during these conversations will be incorporated in a report that C2CC will share with the Ontario legislature. People interested in either leading or participating in one of these conversations can email outreach@controlcancer.ca.

More information about the tour including a host guide for Community Conversations is available at:  http://www.controlcancer.ca/stephen-lewis-tour-201

C2CC is also advocating to have the fight against cancer on the agenda of the G8 and G20 meetings in June, 2010.
