Three Carleton University students are going for gold at the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Sarah Boudens is the only Canadian woman representing Canada in the sport of Whitewater Slalom Kayaking. Boudens is the current national champion in her sport and, last year, brought home the silver medal for Canada from the Pan Am Championships in Brazil.  During her junior career, she dominated the women’s class in Canada and was four time Canadian Junior National Champion. Boudens is a Clean Air Champion which involves speaking at local schools about improving air quality by reducing personal greenhouse gas emissions. “That’s why I am studying civil engineering at Carleton as I want to work on green designs after I graduate. I’ve been really inspired by faculty like Abhijit Sarkar and Burkan Isgor.”

Angus Mortimer is part of a four-person team to compete in men’s K-4 Kayaking. The 22-year-old Carleton student had a great year in 2007, winning three medals at the Pan Am Games in Brazil; gold in the K-1 1000m and silver in the K-1 500m and K-4 1000m events. Born and raised in Ottawa, he trains at the Rideau Canoe Club. Mortimer is a music major in the School for Studies in Art and Culture at Carleton University. “I have been lucky to have professors at Carleton who are able to adapt to me being away at training camps. The use of WebCT has allowed me to leave the country for training camps during the term and keep up-to-date with my lectures.” Mortimer’s father, Brian Mortimer, is Clerk of the Senate at Carleton University.

English major Mark Oldershaw will continue a family tradition when he competes in Solo Flatwater Canoeing. “I grew up with the Olympics as part of my life with my grandfather, father and uncles all competing at the Olympics.” In 2001, Oldershaw was recognized as Canada’s Junior Male Athlete of the Year after winning two gold medals at the Junior World Championships. In 2007, he finished 2nd overall in C-1 points rankings at the World Cup competition and, at the World Championships, finished in 5th place in the C-1 500m event and qualified for the Olympics.
