The Carleton University Library and the National Capital Commission (NCC) are releasing two series of the NCC’s historical map archives online which depict planning and land information for much of the City of Ottawa and parts of the National Capital Region.

The archives contain 698 maps from 1966 to 1980 at map scale 1:1,250 and 1:2,500.

The Library also released indexes to two online City of Ottawa map series, 1:1,200 (1934 – 1979) and 1:2,400 (1957 – 1965). These digital maps are available in the Library.

“The collaboration between the Carleton Library and the NCC will provide students, academics and members of the public with increased access to important data,” says Dan Patterson of the Carleton University Department of Geography.

The maps will be available on the Carleton University Library website at http://www.library.carleton.ca/find/maps

Background

The Ottawa Historical Digital Map Collection is a digital collection of scanned maps of the Ottawa/Gatineau region. The collection consists of map series organized by map scale. Creating digital access to the NCC map series will enable more scholars and members of the public to locate and use these materials. It is important to note that the map indexing is done with open source software.

Permission was granted by the NCC to make available on the Library’s website the old NCC map series, 1:1,250 and 1:2,500. To add to the local area map collection two series of Ottawa maps were donated by the University of Ottawa Library, 1:1,200 and 1:2,400 as well as two digital maps series from the City of Ottawa, 1:5,000 and 1:25,000
