Carleton University President and Vice-Chancellor pro tempore Dr. Samy Mahmoud today announced the appointment of Dr. Jerry Tomberlin to the position of dean of the Sprott School of Business.

Dr. Tomberlin served as the dean of the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in Montreal until last summer. His appointment is effective July 1, 2008 and is for a six-year term.

“I am delighted that Dr. Tomberlin has agreed to join us at Carleton University,” says Dr. Mahmoud. “His extensive experience in leading an established business school and proven business acumen will provide strong leadership for the first-rate faculty and students at the Sprott School of Business.”

Dr. Tomberlin says he is attracted to the position at Carleton University because he is impressed by its unique programs, its award-winning and engaged faculty, and its enthusiastic students.

Dr. Tomberlin, who was educated at Harvard University, brings many years of teaching and administrative experience to Carleton University. He is a professor in the Department of Decision Sciences and Management Information Systems at Concordia University. He was the dean of the John Molson School of Business from 2001 to 2007. In 2005, the School was one of only seven Canadian programs to make the Financial Times international MBA Top 100 List.

“The Sprott School is poised to assume its place among the leading business schools of Canada, and I’m very excited about the prospect of working with students, staff, faculty and the administration to achieve this goal,” says Dr. Tomberlin. The Sprott School of Business just launched a newly redesigned MBA for professionals that features concentrations in financial management, management and change, international business, and technology management. These areas reflect the key business drivers in the Ottawa region and expertise of the School’s award-winning faculty.

Since he joined Concordia in 1984, Dr. Tomberlin has held a variety of positions including department chair, associate dean in the school with two different portfolios: Research and Graduate Studies as well as External Affairs. He also served as academic director of the MBA Program. He has taught at the University of the West Indies, École Supérieur des Sciences Économiques et Commerciales in France and Harvard University. He has an MA and PhD in statistics from Harvard and a Master of Public Health in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Tomberlin has served as a consultant with a number of major corporations and other organizations, including the Royal Bank, General Motors, NASA, Statistics Canada, and le Bureau de la statistique du Québec. He has also published many refereed articles and conference proceedings. His principal research interests are statistical applications in casualty actuarial science, statistical issues in cases of employment discrimination, statistics and the law, and the design and analysis of sample surveys. Dr. Tomberlin replaces acting dean of the Sprott School of Business Roland Thomas who has held the post since April 2007.
