In the early hours of Sept. 1, 2007, a Carleton University student was sexually assaulted in a lab in the Steacie Building.

As a result of this incident, Carleton University officials have posted over 200 security posters with information about the assault and an eye-witness description of the assailant. These posters are displayed in prominent locations across campus. This information is also being sent to students, faculty and staff through e-mail and the web.

Anyone with information about the attack is urged to call the Ottawa Police at (613) 236-1222.

Since Sept. 1, Carleton University security patrols have been tripled. University Safety officials have conducted a special presentation to residence students to ensure members of the community are fully aware of safety procedures on campus. Additional safety sessions are being scheduled.

Students, faculty and staff are being urged to use the buddy system and travel with friends after dark.
University Safety is providing an escort service for those who are concerned about walking alone. As is standard procedure, closed-circuit cameras are being monitored 24/7 and students are reminded to seek out emergency phones located across campus if they are feeling threatened.

University Safety is working very closely with Ottawa Police to solve this crime.

All of us at Carleton University are deeply saddened by this incident and our hearts go out to the victim. We have offered our full assistance to the victim and her family during this most difficult time.
