Carleton University President and Vice-Chancellor pro tempore Dr. Samy Mahmoud today announced the appointment of Dr. George Katsushi Iwama, an internationally-respected research biologist and academic administrator, to the position of Dean of the Faculty of Science at Carleton University. Currently, Dr. Iwama is the Vice-President Academic (Acting) of Acadia University in Nova Scotia. His appointment is effective July 1, 2007 and is for a six-year term.
“Dr. Iwama is an outstanding addition to the Carleton leadership team. He brings extensive experience as a world-class scientist, biologist and environmentalist. As well, he has extensive expertise as an academic, an academic administrator and a Director General at the National Research Council,” said Dr. Samy Mahmoud. “His international reputation, and ties to the scientific and government communities, will greatly enhance the progress made by his predecessor, Dr. Jean-Guy Godin, who is completing a successful five-year term as Dean.
Dr. Iwama says he was attracted to the position at Carleton University because of its strong reputation as a leading research institution and its strong commitment to the learning experience. “I look forward to the opportunity work with the academic staff in the Faculty of Science. The research undertaken at Carleton University is well-established with an excellent reputation on the world stage, and I am enormously proud and honoured to join the team at the University.”
Dr. Iwama brings many years of teaching and administrative experience to Carleton University. He has been at Acadia University since 2004, serving as Dean of Science until his recent appointment in 2006 as that institution’s Vice-President Academic (Acting). While Dean, he initiated a new and innovative teaching format to Acadia, whereby courses are taught in blocks rather than the conventional format. This has resulted in a highly stimulating learning and teaching experience for students and faculty. It also allowed faculty to have contiguous blocks of time for research.
Prior to his appointment at Acadia, Dr. Iwama spent four years as Director General of the National Research Council’s Institute for Marine Biosciences in Halifax, Nova Scotia. During his tenure at the NRC, Dr. Iwama led the building of a new industry partnership facility at NRC’s Institute for Marine Biology incubating new companies and attracting established life science companies in the Maritimes. He also led the initiation of NRC’s newest Institute on Prince Edward Island, the Institute for Nutrisciences and Health.
Dr. Iwama holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia. He served there for 15 years where he attained the rank of full professor in Animal Science. He is the winner of six academic awards including a post-graduate fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council at UBC. He also held a Killam Post-Doctoral Fellowship as well as a Killam Faculty Research Fellowship.
The Carleton University Faculty of Science is research-intensive and an integral part of a university that prides itself in being a leader in discovery and innovation. Students are taught by some of the leading scientific researchers in their disciplines (including 10 named research chairs) and by many award-winning teachers. The faculty enjoys numerous collaborative research and learning relationships with federal government research laboratories, museums, libraries, and high-technology industries in the Ottawa region.
