Carleton University students are hosting the 20th Annual Charity Ball at the Museum of Civilization on Saturday, February 3, 2007, at 8 p.m. This year’s theme is “20 Year’s of Champagne Dreams“. Over the past 20 years, Carleton students volunteering for Charity Ball have raised a total of $202,000 for Ottawa charities.
“Charity Ball is one of the most successful annual charity events hosted by university students,” said Tony Phillips, Charity Ball Club President and Chair of the Committee. “The committee’s theme of ‘20 Years of Champagne Dreams‘ is to provide a fun evening for attendees while raising money for two notable charities in the Ottawa and Carleton community.” This year, after a long and careful process, the Charity Ball Committee has chosen to support the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Hopewell Eating Disorders Centre.
“We have selected these charities because of their significance and importance in the Ottawa community and to Carleton students,” said Phillips. The Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind assists visually-impaired Canadians with their mobility by providing and training them in the use of professionally trained Guide Dogs. The Hopewell Eating Disorders Centre offers support, information, and hope to those dealing with anorexia and bulimia, as well as to their families and friends.
Attendees are encouraged to dress in semi-formal attire. “With music from a DJ and a live band, dancing, drinks and good friends, we hope the entire ball will be a classy and memorable night for everyone,” said Phillips.
The media are invited to attend an advance Charity Ball reception, which is being held at the Elephant and Castle Bar in the Rideau Centre from 5:30-7:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m., the Charity Ball Chair and delegates from the charities will give formal speeches. The Charity Ball committee will then present the cheques to representatives from the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Hopewell Eating Disorders Centre. Media are encouraged to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for the speeches and cheque presentation. Any media wishing to attend are asked to contact either Tony Phillips or Ruby Ho for more details.
This year the Charity Ball is an 18+ event. ID must be presented at the door in order to purchase alcoholic beverages and bracelets will be worn. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at select locations on Carleton’s campus, including the Carleton University Students’ Association office, the Rideau River Residence Association office, Abstentions (residence convenience store), and at promotional tables in the Atrium throughout January.
