Three Carleton Researchers Make Highly Cited Researchers List
The annual Highly Cited Researchers List from Clarivate Analytics includes three Carleton University researchers – Steven J. Cooke, Peter Xiaoping Liu and Lenore Fahrig who also recently received the NSERC Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.
Those on the list have demonstrated significant influence in their chosen fields through the publication of multiple, highly cited papers over the last decade.

Steven J. Cooke
Professor, Department of Biology and Director of the Institute of Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science
This is the third consecutive year that Steven J. Cooke has earned a place on the Highly Cited Researchers list. He also holds the top spot on Google Scholar in fish ecology research.
A former Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Fish Ecology and Conservation Physiology, Cooke has diverse research interests including integrative biology, conservation science and natural resource management. His work spans the natural and social sciences with a focus on developing solutions to problems facing fish and other aquatic organisms.
Cooke was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the senior national body of distinguished Canadian scholars, artists and scientist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, the American Fisheries Society and the Explorer’s Club. Other recent awards include the Zoological Society of London Marsh Award for Marine and Freshwater Conservation, and the Conservation Achievement Award from the American Fisheries Society.

Peter Xiaoping Liu
Professor, Systems and Computer Engineering
Peter X. Liu, is leading research in haptics and tele-operation in Canada. His research interests include interactive networked systems, haptics with applications to medical simulations, robotics, control, intelligent systems, wireless systems and context-aware smart networks. Liu is currently working on visual modelling and rendering for virtual reality based surgical simulation.
Liu, a former Tier 2 Canada Research Chair, is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (USA) and the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Lenore Fahrig
Professor, Department of Biology
Chancellor’s Professor Lenore Fahrig has earned a place on the Highly Cited Researchers list for the third time since 2001. She also holds the top spot on Google Scholar in road ecology.
Fahrig was recently announced the 2022 recipient of the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, which is considered the country’s top science and engineering honour. Fahrig’s trailblazing work on wildlife habitat fragmentation and conservation has reshaped the way that protected areas are designed. Her studies examine how human-caused landscape change – the replacement of forest, wetland, and other natural habitats with roads, farmlands, and cities – affects wildlife and biodiversity.
Fahrig is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Guggenheim Fellow. Her other prestigious awards include the Miroslaw Romanowski Medal for Environmental Science, the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award, and the Distinguished Landscape Ecologist Award from the North American Association for Landscape Ecology.
