Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon has been appointed Chair of the board of directors of U SPORTS for 2020-21.

U SPORTS is the national organization for University sports in Canada, regrouping 56 member institutions and over 20,000 student-athletes.

“I am honoured to serve as Chair of the U SPORTS Board and look forward to working with the leadership team and all member institutions as we continue to adapt to the ongoing public health crisis,” says President Bacon, who joined the board in 2019. “University athletics have been deeply impacted by the pandemic, but we must remain hopeful that we can successfully navigate this crisis and come out stronger on the other side.”

The board is responsible for:

  • Demonstrating commitment to the vision, mission, values and strategic plan of the U SPORTS;
  • Maintaining authority over, and responsibility for, the systems and structures employed by U SPORTS to direct and manage its general operations;
  • Approving strategies, plans, policies and procedures that guide U SPORTS and provide direction for management and all Committees;
  • Ensuring that longer-term strategic plans and annual operating plans for U SPORTS are in place;
  • Ensuring that there are sufficient and appropriate human and financial resources for U SPORTS to accomplish its work;
  • Fulfilling all legal requirements that pertain to Directors and the Board; Remain attentive to the changing needs of U SPORTS’ membership and key stakeholders;
  • Operating as a unified corporate body, speaking with one voice through formal motions adopted at its meetings.

The election of the Board of the Directors normally occurs during the U SPORTS Annual Meeting in June. However, the previous Board composition was extended until the present day, in order to preserve continuity while the organization finalized several key decisions and updated policies and regulations to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic.
