Nov. 4, 2020

To all Faculty,

In order to provide everyone with an extended holiday break and to allow for a few additional days to prepare for the winter 2021 term, Carleton is delaying the start of the winter 2021 term.

Rather than starting on Wednesday, Jan. 6, the winter term will begin on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021. As a result, the winter 2021 terms dates and deadlines have been updated, notably:

  • Monday Jan. 4, 2021: Deadline for course outlines to be made available to students registered in winter term courses
  • Monday, Jan. 25, 2021: Last day for registration for winter term courses.
  • Wednesday, April 14, 2021: Winter term ends. Last day of fall/winter and winter term classes. Classes follow a Friday schedule.
  • April 16-27, 2021: Final examinations in winter term and fall/winter courses may be held. Examinations are normally held all seven days of the week.

The adjustment was undertaken by the Senate Committee on Curriculum, Admission, and Studies Policy, which ensured that the modified start date is in conformity with approved Senate guidelines. The delayed start of the term upholds the university’s required number of instructional days and meets all program accreditation standards. The adjustment is also consistent with the following dates, which were communicated by the Office of the Provost in August:

  • Formally scheduled fall term 2020 deferred final examinations will take place from January 22 to 24 and January 29 to 31, 2021.
  • Carleton students will have a week-long break from February 16 to 19, 2021. No classes will take place during this time. Students cannot be required to attend classes or submit coursework from February 13 to 21. If exceptional circumstances necessitate holding a test after Friday, Feb. 12, such a test can only be scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13 and must be announced on the course outline distributed at the beginning of the term.

Please review the Registrar’s Office website for a complete list of dates and deadlines for the winter 2021 term.

Teaching and Learning Services remains available to provide support for course planning and design. Please reach out by completing the Course Design Intake Form.

Thank you for your continued dedication to providing students with positive learning experiences, despite the current circumstances, and for the care and concern that you continue to show for students.

Sincerely,

Jerry Tomberlin
