November 4, 2020

To All Members of the Carleton Community,

In order to provide everyone with an extended holiday break and to allow for additional time to prepare for the winter 2021 term, Carleton is delaying the beginning of the term by a few days. Rather than starting on Wednesday, Jan. 6, the winter term will begin on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.

As such, over this year’s holiday season, Carleton University will be closed from Thursday, Dec. 24, 2020 through Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021 inclusive. The university will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.

In recognition of your ongoing efforts and dedication over the course of the pandemic, Jan. 4 and 5 are provided as additional days off for all faculty and staff. Employees who have already booked these days as holidays will not need to record them as annual leave.

We recognize that there may be a need for some staff to work on Dec. 24 to conclude activities associated with the fall term. If that is the case, please arrange for a replacement day off with your manager.

The holiday season is a time when employees may also wish to take additional vacation days to extend the holiday period. Please note that should employees wish to schedule additional holidays; this time must be reported on the monthly leave reports.

Holiday Building Closures

During the holiday closure period, all campus buildings will be locked. Authorized faculty, staff and students may gain access using their Campus Cards at card readers.

Campus Safety Services (CSS) will provide access to buildings on an “emergency basis only.” The CSS Communication Centre can be reached at 613-520-4444 in emergencies, and 613-520-3612 for general enquiries.

Please be reminded that under orders from the Government of Ontario and guidance from Public Health Ontario and Ottawa Public Health, Carleton is required to implement COVID-19 screening for all employees. All employees (including faculty, contract instructors, staff and teaching/research assistants) must complete the short COVID-19 Screening Form prior to coming to campus and entering a building, including a restricted access building. This form must be completed every day you come to campus.

Variations of this closure include:

Residence and Dining Services

In advance of the holiday season, the Housing and Residence Life team will provide all students with information about key dates regarding the closure of buildings and availability of meals. No student will be permitted to remain in or enter a closed building. Please visit the residence December closure website for more information.

Recreation and Athletics:

Athletics facilities will be closed Dec. 25 and 26, 2020 and Jan. 1, 2021. For more information regarding specific facility operations over the holidays, including the Ice House, Fitness Centre and Pool, please visit the Athletics website.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Thank you,

Michel Piché
Vice-President (Finance & Administration)
