Carleton University’s Sheryl Hamilton, professor in the School of Journalism and Communication and the Department of Law and Legal Studies, and Journalism instructor Sandra Robinson will discuss freedom of expression in today’s political and social climate, and explore the stakes of communicating publicly.

Hamilton and Robinson are co-editors of the book Law’s Expression: Communication, Law and Media in Canada.

When: Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street, Ottawa
Info: Registration for this event is available online.

Media are invited to attend the event.

Freedom of expression has become a central dimension of the current fractious political and social climate. Hamilton and Robinson’s work critically analyzes the stakes of communicating in a modern democratic society.

Expert panelists Prof. Valerie Steeves of the University of Ottawa and former CBC journalist Sherry Aske will join Hamilton and Robinson. Steeves is a globally recognized scholar in the field of privacy rights, surveillance, human rights and technology – including youth harassment online. Aske is the host of the media literacy podcast Post/Riposte and a communications officer with Elections Canada.

This event is part of the Ottawa International Writer’s Festival.

About the Authors

Hamilton’s academic research explores the senses, bodies, media and regulation in the context of ubiquitous disease threats.

Robinson studies the role of algorithms in contemporary media culture. This work engages with critical concerns around software design, big data, privacy, surveillance and power in relation to how algorithms predict, pre-empt and control information about people, processes and things.
