Women scientists from a diverse range of disciplines will recount their personal experiences navigating careers in a male-dominated field. This event will be an engaging and collaborative evening aimed at increasing awareness and sharing actionable ideas for change.

When: Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, 355 Cooper Street, Ottawa
Info: This event is free and open to the public.

Media are invited to attend the event.

Panelists include Kim Hellemans, chair of the Department of Neuroscience, Vivian Nguyen, assistant professor in the Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science Institute, Mareike Adams, geophysics instructor in the Department of Earth Sciences, and Alexandra Bourgouin, PhD student in the Department of Physics.

Hellemans’s research is focused on understanding the links between cannabis use, social media and mental health among students. She is the co-host of the popular podcast Minding the Brain. Nguyen’s work uses interdisciplinary approaches to address environmental and societal challenges, including topics of natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and food insecurity. Adams’s research has included numerical modelling of the rupture process and source physics of large earthquakes. Bourgouin’s research centres on the determination of the energy required to create an ion pair in air for a high-energy electron beam.

Prof. Rowan Thomson, associate professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Physics, will moderate the panel. A reception will follow.
