Nov. 7 is the International Day of Medical Physics and the birthday of pioneering physicist, Marie Curie. Carleton experts are available to comment on the legacy of Marie Curie and how medical physics has contributed to the medical field.
Rowan Thomson
Professor, Department of Physics
Email: Rowan.Thomson@carleton.ca
Thomson is a Canada Research Chair and assistant dean (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) at Carleton’s Faculty of Science. Her research program involves the development and application of computational techniques and theoretical approaches to study the interactions of radiation with matter, with an emphasis on research questions relevant to radiation therapy treatments for cancer.
Malcolm McEwen
Professor, Department of Physics
Email: Malcolm.McEwen@nrc-cnrc.gc.ca
McEwen is the executive director of the Ottawa Medical Physics Institute (OMPI). OMPI is a regional network of clinical, research, and academic medical physicists tied together by a passion for research and a Carleton research centre. Last year, the OMPI celebrated 30 years of collaboration and innovation with three special events, culminating in a half-day symposium at Carleton on Nov. 7 – the International Day of Medical Physics and the birthday of pioneering physicist, Marie Curie.
Paul Johns
Professor, Department of Physics
Email: Paul.Johns@carleton.ca
Johns is the academic officer of the OMPI, has served as the chair of the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP), and as chair of Carleton’s Department of Physics. He is a fellow of the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine and a fellow of the COMP.
Johns does research at the front end of X-ray imaging, particularly on systems for using scattered radiation and dual-energy radiography. He is available to speak about the contributions medical physicists have made to disease imaging, monitoring and treatment.
