The 2020 university rankings published in Maclean’s magazine on Oct. 3, 2019 show great results for Carleton University in a number of areas, including student satisfaction, research, entry averages, quality programs and overall ranking.
Among comprehensive universities in Canada — those with a significant amount of research activity and a wide range of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including professional degrees — Carleton maintained its Top 5 overall ranking.
With an entry high school grade average that hit a new high of 84.1 per cent, Carleton students reported that they were generally very pleased with their Carleton experience, leading to a Top 3 student satisfaction ranking in the comprehensive category.
In particular, students cited excellent mental health services, experiential learning opportunities, the quality of residence living, student life support, the quality of instructors and steps taken to prevent sexual assault.
Carleton also placed fourth among comprehensive schools on the number of students who have won national awards and the percentage of operating expenditures devoted to scholarships and bursaries for students.
Carleton’s rankings on research also improved and the university is now ranked No. 4 in citations and No. 7 in total research funding.
“Carleton is gathering great momentum and this is reflected in the Maclean’s rankings,” said Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon.
“We continue to be among the highest-ranked comprehensive universities in the country, and to improve in both student satisfaction and research. The future is bright for Carleton.”
Among all universities in Canada (49 were ranked), Carleton’s programs in computer science, engineering and mathematics were ranked in the top 10.
The annual rankings in Maclean’s place universities in one of three categories to recognize differences in the types of institutions – smaller primarily undergraduate schools, larger comprehensive schools, and those that have medical schools. There are 15 universities in the comprehensive category.
