Carleton University’s Virtual Ventures, an award-winning program that offers after school, summer camp and outreach programs for students in the fields of technology and engineering, will launch the new mechanical and aerospace engineering camp She’s Fly! for girls in grades three through nine.

She’s Fly! is designed to encourage young women to pursue careers in STEM, and to learn more about aviation and aerospace engineering. She’s Fly! has been developed in partnership with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the research-intensive Faculty of Engineering and Design.

Virtual Ventures Director Christine Riddell is available to speak to media regarding this new aerospace program.

Virtual Ventures Summer Camp

When: From July 2 to Aug. 16, 2019
Where: Minto Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering, Carleton University

Junior campers from grades three to five will learn about propulsion, aerodynamics, space exploration and the basics of aircraft dynamics. Campers will design two rockets: one to see how high or far it can fly; the other will be built to include a spacecraft crew module with the goal of protecting an egg. Students will also have the opportunity to build and pilot LEGO® drones.

The senior camp offers students from grades six to nine the opportunity to build their own drones and train with a simulator, as well as outdoor line of sight piloting. Campers will have an opportunity to test their skills by conducting a search and rescue mission.
