From Aug. 31 to Sept. 6, 2019, Carleton University will welcome new students to campus throughout its annual Orientation Week. This year’s theme, CU Through the Ages, will feature exciting activities and events to help students transition to university life.

New students can participate in one of three official programs. Centralized Fall Orientation is open to all students and is the largest undergraduate orientation program. Faculty-specific programs are offered to business and engineering students.

Media are invited to attend the following Orientation Week events:

Residence Move-In Weekend
Volunteers will be assisting first-year students as they carry belongings to their new residence rooms.

When: Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Residence Quad, Carleton University
Note: Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon will welcome students arriving to Carleton on Saturday, Aug. 31 beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Opening Ceremonies
The opening ceremonies kickoff Orientation Week with an official welcome for all new Carleton students.

When: Monday, Sept. 2, from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Where:
 Ravens’ Nest, Carleton University
Note
: Bacon will provide welcoming remarks.

Shinerama
Nearly 60 universities and colleges from across Canada raise money for cystic fibrosis research and care as part of Shinerama – one of Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraisers. This year, Carleton’s goal is  $50,000.

Students will visit locations throughout Ottawa as they contribute to this great cause.

When: Friday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the busiest time is approximately 1 p.m.
Where: Various locations across Ottawa, including the intersection of Bank Street and Fifth Avenue.

Concert: Virginia to Vegas and The Zolas

Artists Virginia to Vegas and The Zolas will headline Carleton’s annual Fall Orientation concert.

When:
 Friday, Sept. 6, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Where: Parking Lot 12, Carleton University

About Virginia to Vegas
Virginia to Vegas, also known as Derik Baker, is an American-born Canadian singer-songwriter. Discovered on YouTube, Baker was signed to Wax Records in 2013. His first single, “We Are Stars”, was released in January 2014. Baker is known for indie-pop choruses and sticky electronic melodies, which have garnered him critical acclaim and platinum certifications. Virginia to Vegas recently released his EP Hartand St., which includes the new single “Just Friends.”

About The Zolas
The Zolas are a Canadian indie rock band from Vancouver, B.C. In 2017, they were nominated for the Breakthrough Group of the Year award at the Junos. Their song, “Swooner”, charted at number four on the Canadian Alternative Billboard charts.
