Carleton University’s Menaka Raman-Wilms, who is completing her master’s degree in Journalism, is one of five writers shortlisted for the 2019 CBC Short Story Prize.

Raman-Wilms wrote Black Coffee after seeing how deeply women can be affected by the experiences of other women.

Each finalist receives $1,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and their stories have been published by CBC Books.

The winner will be announced on April 24, 2019. He or she will receive $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and attend a two-week writing residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

The shortlist was selected by the 2019 CBC Short Story Prize jury, comprised of Esi Edugyan, Iain Reid and Lisa Moore. The jury will also select the winner.

A team of readers made up of writers and editors from across Canada compiled the longlist. There were more than 3,000 English-language submissions.

Last year, the first prizewinner was Carleton Journalism alumna Leah Mol, who wrote Lipstick Day.
