Carleton University’s Faculty of Engineering and Design will host its annual John Adjeleian Lecture on the topic of The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful – Leonardo’s Studies of Turbulence, presented by Prof. Ugo Piomelli (Queen’s University).
This year’s event is part of Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci, a year-long celebration that commemorates the 500 years since his passing and takes a comprehensive look at the life and work of one of history’s most fascinating people.

Fluid dynamics appear often in da Vinci’s notebooks: sketches of water flow, plans for flying machines, studies of bird flight. Fascinated by the eddying movement of water, he designed ingenious experiments to try to understand the causes of these complex motions. While he lacked the advanced mathematical tools required to study this subject properly, he made exceptionally perceptive remarks that foreshadowed experimental and theoretical techniques used today in the analysis of flow problems.
In this lecture, Piomelli will discuss some of da Vinci’s reflections on turbulence, vis-à-vis the present understanding of this captivating but baffling subject – perhaps the last unsolved problem in classical physics.
About Ugo Piomelli
Piomelli is the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Turbulence Simulation and Modelling, and the HPCVL-Sun Microsystems Chair in Computational Science and Engineering. Piomelli is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Physics (UK) and of the American Physical Society. He is Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Turbulence.
About the John Adjeleian Lecture
The annual John Adjeleian Lecture was established by Carleton’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2003 to honour the late John Adjeleian, emeritus professor of Engineering at Carleton, for his outstanding contributions to the university and to the profession of civil engineering. He was the founder of the firm Adjeleian Allen Rubeli Ltd., which has provided engineering services to more than 3,000 projects, including the Fathers of Confederation Memorial Building in P.E.I., National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) in Toronto.
