We are pleased to announce the appointment of Benny Michaud as Assistant Director of the Department of Equity Services, effective Dec. 20, 2018. She has been in this position in an acting role since April 2018.

Michaud joined Carleton University in 2016 as the Indigenous Liaison Officer in the Centre for Indigenous Initiatives. She has made significant contributions to the university’s Indigenous initiatives and currently co-chairs the newly established Carleton University Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Committee (CUISIC).

Michaud has had a remarkable presence in the Indigenous community in Ottawa. She co-founded and organized the annual Louis Riel Day Celebration of Métis Culture and History, the largest Métis cultural gathering in Ottawa. As part of the celebration, the Louis Riel Community Service Award is presented to a Métis person serving their community. She represents the Two-Spirit community on the Champlain Region LHIN’s Trans, Two-Spirit and Gender Diverse Planning table, which seeks to improve health care pathways. Michaud also works with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board to help them implement Indigenous-focused curriculum.

Michaud is a Carleton alumna, having obtained a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History and a minor in Indigenous Studies. She earned a Bachelor of Education from the Indigenous Teacher Education Program at Queen’s University and a Master of Arts in Canadian and Indigenous Studies from Trent University.

We look forward to Benny’s continued leadership as we embark on a large-scale consultation with the CUISIC.

Sincerely,

Ikram Jama
